What Is PRP Therapy and
How Does It Work?
PRP therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that uses your pet’s own blood to promote healing. Platelets contain growth factors that help repair tissue, reduce inflammation, and encourage recovery.
The process is straightforward and completed during a scheduled visit:
A small blood sample is taken from your pet
The sample is processed to concentrate the platelets
The platelet-rich plasma is injected into the targeted area
From start to finish, the process typically takes about 30 minutes. In some cases, more than one area can be treated during the same visit.
How PRP Therapy Can Help Your Pet
PRP therapy is used to address both sudden injuries and ongoing conditions, particularly those involving joints and soft tissues.
It may be recommended for:
Osteoarthritis, including hip dysplasia
Knee conditions such as partial cruciate ligament tears
Tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries
Wound repair, including burns and slow-healing wounds
Certain spinal conditions
Many pets begin to show improvement within a few days, with continued progress over several weeks. After treatment, a short period of rest allows the therapy to take effect. Some pets benefit from a single treatment, while others may need follow-up care depending on their condition.
Because PRP uses your pet’s own biological material, reactions are uncommon, making it a strong option for pets with sensitivities to certain medications.
